Baptism (Come Follow Me Lesson for Kids: May 20-26)

This week's topic is so very important for all of us! But it's especially important for young children as they look forward to their own baptism! We hope that as you and your children study the scriptures together this week, you will be able to feel the sacredness and importance of the ordinance of baptism.

Tell children that they will be learning about symbols today. Explain:

“A symbol is when we see something that makes us think of something else. Let’s practice and see if you can make some symbols with our hands!”

1) Can anyone show me the symbol for “I love you?” (Thumb, pinky finger, & index finger

extended.)

2) Can anyone show me the symbol for “good job” or “yes?” (Thumbs up.)

3) Can anyone show me the symbol for “not good” or “no?” (Thumbs down.)

4) Can anyone show me the symbol for “hello” and “goodbye?” (Waving hand.)

After you conclude the activity, discuss the following questions:

1) When you see a traffic light, what is the color green a symbol for? (Go.)

2) What about the color red? What is that a symbol for? (Stop.)

3) Why do you think we use these symbols on traffic lights instead of words? (Easier to remember.)

4) Which one is easiest to understand? The words, or the symbol? (The Symbol.)

5) Which one do you think you will remember the most? The words, or the symbol? (discuss)

Explain: Heavenly Father uses symbols sometimes to teach us important things. Symbols help us understand and remember the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Say: “Today, we are going to watch a video about the symbols of baptism that teach us about Jesus Christ! Watch closely and see how many of the symbols you can remember!”

Discuss the following questions after watching the video:

1) When we are baptized, we wear white clothing as a symbol. Do you remember what the white clothing makes us think of? (Jesus Christ is clean and pure, we can also be clean

and pure!)

2) We are baptized in water and the water is a symbol. Do you remember what the water makes us think of? (Being washed clean of our sins).

3) When we are baptized, we go down into the water. Do you remember what going down into the water makes us think of? (Christ’s death and burial.)

4) After we go down into the water, we come back up. Do you remember what coming up out of the water makes us think of? (Christ’s resurrection.)

5) When we are baptized, the priesthood holder raises his arm into the air. Do you remember what that makes us think of? (Making a promise, going up to be with Heavenly Father).

➤ S C R I P T U R E

Read the following verses together and discuss the questions that follow.

1) What did Alma teach the people they needed to do before getting baptized? (Repentance and

faith in Jesus Christ.)

1) Alma invited the people to be baptized as a covenant with God. Do you remember what a

covenant is? (Making promises to God, and God making promises to us.)

1) What does it mean when we clap our hands? (it means we are happy or excited!)

2) Can you think of a time when you clapped your hands because you were excited or happy? (Discuss).

3) Why were these people clapping their hands? Why were they excited or happy? (They were filled with joy because they really wanted to be baptized!)

1) How many people were baptized? Do you remember what the scripture said? (About 204 souls.)

2) The scripture says they were baptized in the waters of Mormon. Do you remember what the water is a symbol of? (Being washed clean of our sins.)
