Spiritual Battles (Come Follow Me Lesson for Kids: August 12-18)

Some of the most important battles our children will encounter in their lives are spiritual battles. Just like we can prepare for a physical battle, there are also steps we can take to prepare for spiritual battles.

“...but if ye are prepared ye shall not fear.” D&C 38:30

This week’s lesson bundle will help your children learn some simple steps they can take to fortify and strengthen their hearts for the spiritual battles that they will face.

You will need a ziploc bag, a napkin or paper towel, a bowl of water, and some food coloring for the water. Fill the bowl partially with water and add some food coloring. Mix several colors together so that the water becomes dark and murky!

Display the bowl of dark water and hold up the napkin while you discuss the following questions:

1) What will happen if this napkin touches the water? (Discuss.)

2) What if the napkin only touches the water a little bit? Will the napkin be okay? (Discuss.)

Dip the end of the napkin into the water and allow the water to soak into the napkin. Continue to hold the napkin partially in the water while you discuss the following questions:

1) What is happening? (The water is going into the napkin.)

2) Is the napkin getting stronger or weaker? (Weaker.)

3) What do you think will happen if I drop the napkin? (Discuss.)

Now place a second napkin inside a ziploc bag and dip the bag into the same bowl of water. Discuss the following questions:

1) What is happening to this napkin? (Nothing! It’s safe!)

2) Is any of the water going into this napkin? (No.)

3) Why not? (The ziploc bag is protecting it.)

Explain the following: “There is a spiritual battle in this world between good and evil. Satan wants darkness to go inside our hearts, just like when the dirty water went into the napkin. He wants to take away our happiness and make us weak. But Heavenly Father is strong enough to resist evil! If we have faith in Jesus Christ, He can protect us from our spiritual enemies, just like this bag protected the napkin!”

Say: “Now we are going to watch a video about a story from the Book of Mormon. In this story, the Lamanites hated the Nephites and wanted to destroy them. Captain Moroni is a Nephite and he does some things to help protect his people from the Lamanites. See if you can remember some of the things that Moroni does to keep the Nephites safe!”

Discuss the following questions after watching the video:

1) What are some of the things that Moroni did to protect his people from the Lamanites? (Discuss the things that the children remembered.)

2) Why did Moroni build walls around the cities? (To make them stronger.)

3) Why did Moroni build towers? (So they could see when the Lamanites were coming.)

4) Why did Moroni put the title of liberty on all of the towers? (So they would remember their covenants and the things that were most important.)

5) Why did Moroni pray? (Because he knew that he needed God’s strength and he trusted God.)

Pass out the scripture-read-along page. Invite children to listen closely as you read. When the children hear something that Moroni did to protect his people, invite them to draw a square around the matching image on the read-along page.

28 And Moroni placed spies round about, that he might know when the camp of the Lamanites should come.

12 And it came to pass that he rent his coat; and he took a piece thereof, and wrote upon it—In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children—and he fastened it upon the end of a pole. (Title of Liberty)

16 And therefore, at this time, Moroni prayed that the cause of the Christians, and the freedom of the land might be favored.

21 And it came to pass that when Moroni had proclaimed these words, behold, the people came running together with their armor girded about their loins, rending their garments in token, or as a covenant, that they would not forsake the Lord their God; or, in other words, if they should transgress the commandments of God, or fall into transgression, and be ashamed to take upon them the name of Christ, the Lord should rend them even as they had rent their garments.

36 And it came to pass also, that he caused the title of liberty to be hoisted upon every tower which was in all the land, which was possessed by the Nephites; and thus Moroni planted the standard of liberty among the Nephites.

8 Yea, he had been strengthening the armies of the Nephites, and erecting small forts, or places of resort; throwing up banks of earth round about to enclose his armies, and also building walls of stone to encircle them about, round about their cities and the borders of their lands; yea, all round about the land.

After reading the scripture verses, discuss the following question:

1) Moroni did many things to strengthen and protect his people against the Lamanites. What are some things that we can so that we can be spiritually strong? (Discuss.)
